One of the most fun things about adulting is the opportunity to have your own space where you can do whatever you want and decorate to your taste and once youve set it up to your satisfaction, its time to have friends and family over to show it off.

But renting or buying a home, decorating it and setting up all the utilities and amenities is an expensive undertaking, so you might not want to spend a bunch of money on a lavish and expensive party.

Luckily, you dont have to. There are plenty of ways to entertain without breaking the bank, and after all: The company and camaraderie are by far the most important part of any gathering.

Here are four suggestions for entertaining guests when youre on a fixed budget.

Host a traditional potluck dinner

You cant go wrong with a potluck dinner party. Its basically crowdsourcing a meal to share with all your friends. Tell them youll be responsible for the main course, let them know what it is and ask everyone to bring a side dish that will complement it. Itll save you some money and some time in the kitchen.

Have game night at your place

Chances are youve got some board games or cards lying around somewhere, so invite a crew over for some friendly competition. Its a great way to show off your new house while keeping everyone entertained. And if you want to throw in a nostalgic twist, you can take it outside and play some games from childhood, like Tag, Capture the Flag and Four Square. (Just make sure everyone knows beforehand to show up ready for some friendly competition.)

Throw a pizza party

Pizza is basically like bait for Millennials. If youve got some pies and they know it, they will come. You can go at this from two angles: The traditional way, which means you throw down for a slew of various pies for your friends and family to munch on. Or, you can go with a more fun, creative route: Ask each of your guests to bring a pizza topping or ingredient while you supply the sauces and dough, and then you can collaborate on different styles and combinations.

Kick your party off with dessert

Instead of a full-fledged dinner party, skip the hassle of a three-course meal in favor of a dessert party. Tell your guests to come over after dinner hours, but to save some room to satiate their sweet tooth. You could, for example, set up a chocolate fondue fountain with a smorgasbord of fruits, pretzels, marshmallows and other items laid out for dipping purposes. Couple dessert with a movie, and your night is set.
